Major book stores projected to be gone in 8 years

Earl August 24th, 2010 No Comments

In a very interesting article published on the web site, Seeking Alpha, there is a very interesting article on the success of the Kindle vs Apple’s iBooks. However, in this article, “Kindle is Outselling iBooks Big Time“, the author makes a prediction on the demise of the book stores as we know them in something like 5 to 8 years. Essentially, in this decade there is going to be a hugh transformation of the delivery system of what was formally

Fuji Velvia and Digital Photography

Earl August 18th, 2010 1 Comment

Among my photography friends I continue to have this running debate regarding one of landscape photography’s standard films, Fujifilm’s Velvia 50. I often maintain that the look and feel of this film cannot be replicated in digital photography nor accurately in post processing. Of course, some of my more computer savvy friends claim one can achieve anything with enough work in Photoshop and I have to admit this is true. However, several times over the years I have made a run at

Spring on the East Coast

Earl June 15th, 2010 No Comments

My wife and I returned from a rather long trip to Washington DC, Long Island NY, Connecticut and Pennsylvania for a combination of family functions, photography, and work. I would say that about 2/3 of the trip represented cold, cloudy and rainy weather. However there were enough sunny days for me to obtain some decent images.
Most of the lighthouse images are of the Fire Island Light on Long Island. I found it to be a rather photogenic light and I

Coming to a National Park near you, a Walmart Super Center:

Earl June 2nd, 2010 No Comments

It is prophetic that Ken Burn’s latest production deals with the history of our National Parks. In Mr. Burn’s documentary, he highlighted the fight that has taken place over the years between private commercial interests and those of the larger good of our society. The benefit of our campaign extends to future generations who are not denied the ability to know and share with us the natural glory and historical tradition the National Park System encompasses.
Starting most notably with Yosemite

Live View and Image Playback

Earl April 1st, 2010 No Comments

Having begun shooting in the days of film, I must admit that I have had this long established process of capturing images and  reviewing them after they were in my computer, whether it was a workstation or laptop; kind of the same process as with film. In my just completed trip to Arizona, I was committed to using live view; the Canon terminology for viewing the image ,”before” taking the picture. With Live View, one is able to “see” the

Arizona Spring and Photoshop CS5

Earl March 31st, 2010 No Comments

Just got back from a trip to Scottsdale to see family and a chance to enjoy some warmer weather. While down there, I had a chance to drive up to Bartlett Reservoir and photograph some of the Sonora Desert wildflowers that were in full bloom. Thanks to the Desert USA web site and their wildflower report, I would never have known to search this area. As it was, getting to Bartlett Reservoir was an hours drive form the family’s place

The Cost of a WordPress Web Site

Earl March 13th, 2010 No Comments

I though I would put together the cost for me to develop this WordPress site. Not included in this figure is my time in developing it, but I am not a programmer or developer. I do have a very limited knowledge of web site design and I am willing to get my hands dirty. That does mean that one makes mistakes, but if one fallows a process of backing things up and making copies before experimenting, you always have a

Earl Discovers iPhone/iPod Touch Apps

Earl March 12th, 2010 No Comments

It is not that I haven’t known that iPhone/iPod Touch apps existed before even though I do not presently own an iPhone. As a Verizon user, I purchased an iPod Touch last year to install a couple of photography apps to use out in the filed, one being a Depth of Field calculator and the other was the On One app for controlling ones camera. However, with the introduction of Robert Giroux’s Easy Release, an app designed to allow photographers

WordPress Site

Earl March 11th, 2010 No Comments

Well, I have my new web site up and running. Some final tweaking to do, but essentially it is finally done. An interesting transition from an html site to a one dependent on the WordPress Blog structure. The advantage of using WordPress is that there are so many templates available either for free or for a nominal price. I ended up using a template from Viva Themes to give me a jump start on the the process.
Then there comes

Pennsylvania Winter

Earl March 8th, 2010 No Comments

Since my wife joined the Board of Trustee’s for Wilson College, the women’s college she attended in south Central Pennsylvania, I have the advantage of tagging along with her  three times a year. This year found us slotted between two storm systems. I was hopping  for snow but we got  warm weather. One sunny day I was able to get out and get some nice images of the country, barns and some horses.
Here are some of the images from this
